In Kalofer, they call the Kukeri “startsi” (“elders”) as it is traditional in the whole region of Karlovo. They also take billy-goats with them ie masked people with black goat furs with hairs outside.
Usually, the billy-goats are two, and fight with each other. However, there may also be just one billy-goat frightening the public while stepping towards it with horns ahead.

ClothesThe Kalofer's Kukeri wear white shirts, and above them dress female pinafores decorated with “titereta”.
They put legs (“badzhatsi”) of fur of long-haired goats bred in the Town of Kalofer, Karlovo region, with hair outside. The legs are mostly black. The costume is borrowed from the neighbouring villages. “Regarding the costume, we stole a bit from the Vasil Levski Village. They still tend to accuse us of stealing both steps and costume.” Usually, two Kukeri with white pants and big bells (“tuchove”) will end the Kuker lines. |
Moves and Steps
The Kuker “horo” (a traditional dance) has got a characteristic step – a group jump in unison. They shift a slower pace with some quicker moves. The public tends to get impressed by the exceptional energy and enthusiasm of “jumping” by the Kalofer's Kukeri.
The steps were originally the same as the ones of Vasil Levski Village. However, they later changed them to differ. The Kalofer's Kuker step is slower; “it is something between the ones of Vasil Levski Village and Sushitsa District of Karlovo”. Peter Naidenov, the founder and first artistic manager of the bagpipe band based in the local Community Cultural Centre (“Chitalishte”) helped a lot with the moves.
