- They have a festive table at each home with traditional forgiveness taking (“proshka”) and “hamkane” (a traditional children play for the kids of the family to catch a piece of khalva with mouths).
Sirnitsa on the Square AfternoonThe people will gather on the square at around 13:30 when they hear the "hlopki" (the round-bellied bells). The feast will be announced by posters too.
They employ a folk orchestra that plays one or two horo (a traditional Bulgarian chain dance). Sometimes, there is a programme by a professional ensemble such as "Trakia" ensamble or another for about a half an hour. Meanwhile, the Kukeri will gather on the market square, and will go to the town centre with their characteristic step. When they reach the square, the people will free space for them, and they will dance for about 35-40 minutes. They step in a circle, split into two columns with the two leaders ahead at one point... Then, they disperse on the square. |
Sirnitsa at Home in the EveningThe celebration will end on the square at about 15:00, and the people will come back home to the dinner. They will do the "hamkane" custom (a play for the children of the house trying to catch a piece of white khalva by mouths). The most typical traditional dish for Sirnitsa is "poleti yaitsa" ("covered eggs") - broken over some boiling water, put upon some cottage cheese, poured with some fried butter and sprinkled with red pepper. They will still kiss the hands for the elder family members for taking forgiveness.
