Sirnitsa on the Square at Noon
The celebration will begin in Sirnitsa (the Bulgarian and Orthodox version of the Shrove Sunday) at 13:00. First, there will be live folk music with microphones employed by the organisers.
In the mask contest which will follow the participants will be from little children to adults aged 60-70 years. For instance in 2009, there was a large number of masked. There will also be a jury and awards for the contest. The jury will include the mayor, the secretary of the local Chitalishte (the community cultural centre) and anyone else. They will rate the contestants from first to third places although each masked will gain an award: by 5 leva for the children, and a bit higher amount for the adults.
The other masked (which are not Kukeri) are called “monkeys” (“maimunki”) in the Village of Sokolitsa. There have been masks of a bride and a groom for example. However, the Kukeri will always win the first place.
Between the two performances of the masked, there will be horo dances (horo – a traditional Bulgarian chain dance) on the square, which will continue after the end of the mask contest and until the evening. Meanwhile, the Kukeri will circulate and play. The feast will last until 20:00 on the square.
The Kukeri will not undress until the evening. Before coming back to their homes, they will go to the cafe to treat themselves.
